"One of Those Days"

Have you ever just had "one of those days" where alot of things seem to go wrong at once? Well, I am in the middle of one right now. Today, I dropped my son off at preschool and he was going on a field trip to a pizza place where one of the children's dad's is the owner. I thought it was a great idea, and that he would make his own pizza and it would be fun. When I picked him up he had a little pizza box with his own little homemade pizza inside. He was so excited and a little hyper. I thought it was just all of the excitement. Well, we got into the car (which was a little bit of a struggle) and we headed home. I asked him a bunch of questions like I usually do and he offered a few of his own things. Then....he said "mommy, guess what I had today?" I said "what did you have", he said "a lollipop." And I said "Oh...good buddy." with a little hesitancy. I was thinking, "that's where the hyperness came from." Oh no. not done. Then, he said "guess what else I had?" and I thought "oh no, here it comes." and out it came... "I had soda!!!!" I sat quiet for a second thinking why a 3 year old would be having soda at 11 o'clock in the morning or having it at all for that matter. I thought he was joking so, I said "did you really?" "yes," he said "it was sprite." Ok now, I'm not a total fanatic about things but, I try to keep my family healthy, and a lollipop is bad enough in the morning but...soda. The reason I'm so upset about it is that for the past 3 hours I've been dealing with a terribly unruly child to say the least. The very least. We have had tantrums and screaming, and every outburst you can possibly imagine and a huge lack of napping. He actually went into my daughters room and woke her up and it took me 45 minutes to get her back to sleep. I wanted to take him outside to burn off some of his "energy" but, A wouldn't sleep so, that didnt' work. Why do I have time to blog right now, you ask? Well, It is finally somewhat silent around here. I think K has finally decided that he is tired. Oh, and did I mention we're having company tonight and my house is not even close to being clean? I know that's not the most important thing but, I did want to tidy up a bit before they came. I'm sure all of you who are moms can relate to this. I just felt like venting. I think next time there is a field trip, I will be specific about the "no soda" thing. I wonder how many other parents had a similar experience today? Sugar and my son do not mix well. People are surprised to hear that because often we think it doesn't effect us but, if we were to totally stop eating it, we'd probably notice a big difference. Although, I don't intend to give up sweets anytime soon, it does effect us in different ways...especially three year old boys. :) For his birthday last year, I made a "mock soda" with juice concentrate and plain seltzer. The kids loved it and they thought it was real soda but, it didn't have the same effect on them. Anyway, I'm done venting. Thanks for listening, er, reading. Time to get something done with the little time I have. Oh well, tomorrow is another day, right?

I understand what you mean...I haven't given K hardly any sugar..and don't plan to for a while...some people think I am crazy and I say...he is busy enough without sugar in his system!!!! And...I hope things went well with your company tonight.

I'm not sure what would happen if Eve had a soda. She might combust! :)
It's tough because watching sugar amounts with children is not even a thought process to some people. I am learning to be very specific and pointed with Eve's teachers etc. It's not that I am rude - just specific. Most of the time they tell me how they appreciate that we are careful with our diet.

I hope that all the sugar induced "stuff" is gone by tomorrow, and that you had a wonderful time with your company!

We've had several similar experiences - people give Juli something that we would never give her as a "treat". Once it's done, what can you say? Other than: I'll be more specific next time. Keeping the sugar and chemicals out of our diet as much as possible is important to me. It's not that Juli's never had sugar (I wish, but that's just not where we're at right now :), but the refined sugar she has is "few and far between". I've done the cut out all sugar thing and it really is amazing how much better my system runs - how much better I feel. How much more of an effect does it have on a little one? It's worth keeping up the fight!
